What is the U.S ESTA?

The Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) is an automated system used by the U.S. government to determine eligibility for visa-free travel under the Visa Waiver Program (VWP). ESTA approval is mandatory for eligible travelers planning short stays for tourism, business, or transit purposes.

Travelers from VWP-designated countries—such as the United Kingdom, Australia, Japan, and most of Europe—must obtain ESTA approval before traveling to the United States. The application is completed online, and once approved, the ESTA is electronically linked to your passport.

An ESTA is required for the following types of travel:

  • Tourism – Holidays, sightseeing, visiting friends or family
  • Business – Meetings, conferences, or similar business activities
  • Short Study Programs – Traveling through the U.S. en route to another destination
  • Transit – Passing through US en route to another destination

An approved ESTA is valid for two years or until your passport expires, whichever occurs first, and allows multiple entries of up to 90 days each.

Eligibility & Validity

The US Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) permits eligible travellers to board transport to the United States under the Visa Waiver Program for tourism, business, or transit stays of up to 90 days.

An approved ESTA is electronically linked to your passport and is generally valid for multiple entries over a two-year period, or until your passport expires,  whichever comes first.

Eligibility depends on nationality, travel purpose, and passport status. Requirements may change based on U.S. immigration policy and Visa Waiver Program participation

Who Needs an ESTA

Travelers from Visa Waiver Program (VWP) eligible countries visiting the United States for tourism, business, or transit stays of 90 days or less must apply for and receive ESTA approval before traveling.

An ESTA must be approved prior to boarding flights or other transportation to the U.S. Each traveler, including minors, must have their own approved ESTA linked to their passport.

Travelers holding a valid U.S. visa, or who are U.S. citizens, permanent residents, or citizens of countries not participating in the VWP, do not require an ESTA.

U.S. ESTA Requirements

All eligible travelers must meet the following requirements to apply for a U.S. ESTA:

Valid Passport

Applicants must hold a valid passport from a VWP-designated country. It is recommended your passport remains valid for at least two years to fully utilize the ESTA's validity.

Travel & Background Information

Applicants are required to provide transit details and background information related to immigration, health & criminal history to determine eligibility

Payment Method

Applicants must have a valid credit or debit card, or access to Apple Pay or Google Pay, to pay the ESTA processing fee.

A valid email address is necessary to receive your ESTA application status and confirmation.

ESTA Decision

Applicants are notified of their ESTA decision by email, once the application is processed.

Confirmation will be emailed and electronically linked to your passport. No printed confirmation is required upon entry. The ESTA allows multiple visits to the U.S., each lasting up to 90 days, valid for two years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first.
